Play Emberdeep online for free
Emberdeep is Arcadia’s original cave-digging adventure in the great home-computer tradition: tunnel through soil, gather crystals, and never forget that a rock with nothing under it is a rock about to fall. Six hand-built caves stand between your orange explorer and the light.
Unlike the real-time classics of the genre, Emberdeep is turn-based. Nothing moves until you do — every step or wait advances the cave exactly one turn, and a loosened rock glows for a full turn before it drops. That turns reflex panic into route planning: you can read the whole cave, think as long as you like, and undo up to 500 turns when a plan goes wrong. Even being crushed is just an undo away.
Each cave asks the same three things: collect enough crystals, light both beacons, and reach the lift. All six caves are open for practice from the start, completions are remembered, and your best move count per cave is saved on your device. No account, no download, no mercy from gravity.
How to Play
- Enter a cave and survey it — nothing moves until your first step.
- Move with the arrow keys, WASD or the on-screen controls; each step or wait is one turn.
- Dig through soil to reach crystals until the counter shows the lift’s requirement is met.
- Watch the rocks: undermine one and it glows for a turn, then falls on the next.
- Light both beacons by walking into them — the lift stays locked without them.
- Reach the lift to clear the cave; undo rewinds up to 500 turns whenever you need it.
Emberdeep Rules
Turns. Emberdeep advances only when you act. A step, a push, or a deliberate wait each costs one turn, and everything that is going to happen — rocks settling, warnings expiring — happens in that same turn. Thinking is free.
The cave. Caves are built from walls, diggable soil, open tunnels, crystals, beacons, rocks and the lift. Walls never move; soil disappears as you walk through it, and what you dig away stays away.
Crystals and beacons. The counter shows how many crystals the lift requires; collect them by walking onto them. Both beacons in the cave must also be lit — walk into each one — before the lift unlocks. Crystals alone are never enough.
Gravity. A rock loses its support when the tile under it is dug away or vacated. It does not fall at once: it glows for one warning turn, then falls on the next, and keeps falling until something stops it. A falling rock that lands on the explorer ends the cave.
Pushing. A single rock with empty space behind it can be pushed sideways, one tile per turn. Two rocks in a row are too heavy, and a rock never pushes upward or downward.
The lift. Once the crystal requirement is met and both beacons are lit, the lift unlocks — its display shows the change. Step in and the cave is cleared, your move count recorded.
Undo and records. Undo rewinds the complete state one turn at a time, up to 500 turns deep, including the turn that crushed you. It costs nothing and is never punished. Completions and best move counts are stored per cave in your own browser.
The six caves. All caves are open from the start for practice. Clearing cave six returns you to the surface — and to cave one, with your records intact.
Emberdeep Strategy
- Read before you dig. The cave is fully visible and completely patient. Trace your route to every crystal, both beacons and the lift before the first step — the best players finish a cave in their head first.
- Dig around, not under. Every tile of soil you remove can be the support of something above it. Approach crystals from the side or above when you can, and treat digging directly under a rock as a decision, not a habit.
- Use the warning turn. A glowing rock is information, not yet danger. One waiting turn lets it fall where you planned; walking under it on that turn is how caves end.
- Drop rocks on purpose. A rock that has fallen is a rock that can no longer surprise you. Clearing a dangerous ceiling from a safe angle before you need the passage is nearly always worth the turns.
- Push early. A rock blocking a corridor is easiest to handle before you have dug away the space you would push it into. Check the tile behind it before you commit.
- Undo without shame. Undo is unlimited in depth and cost-free — it is the designed way to explore a risky line. Try the aggressive route; the cave will not remember.
- Refine for the record. The move counter rewards routes, not speed. Once a cave is cleared, replay it with a tighter plan — combining crystal runs and beacon detours is where the big savings live.
Tips
Strong play usually comes from tempo, risk control, and converting small advantages.
- Play lines that keep your options open.
- Protect key assets and avoid overextending.
- Force your opponent into predictable responses.
FAQ
Is Emberdeep real-time?
No. Every step or wait advances the cave exactly one turn, and nothing happens while you are thinking. It plays like a puzzle, not a reflex test.
Why did a rock fall on me?
A rock with nothing under it glows for one warning turn and falls on the next. If you were underneath on that turn, the cave ends — undo rewinds it, including the fatal step.
What do the beacons do?
Both beacons in a cave must be lit, by walking into them, before the lift unlocks. The crystal counter alone never opens the lift.
Can I undo after being crushed?
Yes. Undo restores up to 500 previous turns, works after death, and is never penalised. It is meant to be used.
Can I push rocks?
A single rock can be pushed sideways into empty space, one tile per turn. Two rocks in a row are too heavy, and rocks never push up or down.
Do I have to play the caves in order?
No. All six caves are open for practice from the start. Completing a cave marks it cleared and saves your best move count for it.
What gets saved between sessions?
Completed caves and your best move count per cave, stored in your own browser. There is no account and nothing is uploaded; clearing browser data resets the records.
Is Emberdeep really free?
Yes. It plays free in your browser with no download, no account and no stake of any kind.
