How to Play
- Bidding: Each round begins with players bidding the number of tricks they expect to win. Bids of the two partners are added together to form the team goal.
- The Goal: Your team must win at least as many tricks as you bid collectively. Winning more than your bid results in "bags" — collect 10 bags and you lose 100 points.
- Tricks: Players must follow suit if possible. Spades are always trump. The highest card of the lead suit wins the trick, or the highest spade if any were played.
- Breaking Spades: You cannot lead with a spade until spades have been "broken" in an earlier trick, or you have only spades left in your hand.
Bidding: Nil, Bags and the Numbers That Matter
Bidding is where Spades is won. Count your sure tricks first: high spades (A, K, Q), aces in side suits, and protected kings. A typical hand is worth 2–4 tricks, so most team bids land between 4 and 8.
A Nil bid declares you will win zero tricks: +100 points if you make it, −100 if even one trick falls your way. Your partner must cover you by taking the leads you duck. Making your team bid scores 10 points per bid trick; every overtrick is one bag — reach 10 bags and your team is docked 100 points, so precision beats greed.
Strategy: Making Your Bid
Lead low from long side suits early to feel out where the missing honours sit, and save your spades to trump the suits you have exhausted. Watch your partner's bid: with a combined 7 or more, take your tricks early rather than finessing. When defending against a Nil, feed low cards under the Nil bidder so they are forced to win a trick. And when your own bid is already made, dump your winners into tricks your opponents have won — handing them bags is one of the quiet pleasures of the game.
