The Connection Game

YOU PLAY RED

Place a stone on any empty cell. Win by forming an unbroken chain of red stones linking the left edge to the right edge.

THE AI PLAYS BLUE

The machine links top to bottom. Stones never move and are never captured — and a full board always has exactly one winner.

HEX

Connect your two sides before the machine connects its own.

HOW TO PLAY
Hex — The Connection Game

THE GOAL

Players take turns placing a stone on any empty cell. Stones never move and are never captured. You play red and win by forming an unbroken chain of red stones linking the left edge to the right edge. The AI plays blue and aims to link top to bottom.

WHY IT NEVER DRAWS

A full Hex board always contains exactly one winning chain. Invented twice independently — by Piet Hein in 1942 and John Nash in 1948 — Hex is famous for being easy to learn and impossible to exhaust.

TIPS

  • The center is the most valuable territory — contest it early.
  • Diagonal "bridge" pairs of stones are almost as strong as solid connections.
  • Every move is dual-purpose: it advances your chain and blocks the AI's.
