The Game of Passing
Played in Egypt 5,000 years ago

THROW & RACE

Throw four casting sticks, move your five shell pawns along the winding 30-square path, and bear them all off before Anubis.

ATTACK & DEFEND

Land on a lone enemy to swap places. A pawn beside a friend is safe; three in a row form a wall that cannot be passed.

HOW TO PLAY
Senet — Ancient Egyptian Race Game

THE BOARD

Thirty squares in three rows, walked as a winding path: left to right, then right to left, then left to right again. Each player has five pawns — move all five off the board to win.

THROWING

Four casting sticks are thrown. Count the light sides facing up: that is your move (1 to 4). All dark sides up counts as 5. A throw of 1, 4 or 5 grants another throw after you move. A throw of 2 or 3 ends your turn.

MOVING & ATTACKING

Land on a lone enemy pawn to swap places with it. A pawn standing next to a friendly pawn is protected. Three friendly pawns in a row form a wall enemies cannot pass. If you cannot move forward, you must move backward; if no move is possible at all, your turn is lost.

THE FINAL SQUARES

Square 26, the House of Beauty, is a mandatory stop: every pawn must land there exactly. Square 27, the House of Waters, washes a pawn back to square 15. Squares 28, 29 and 30 release a pawn off the board on an exact throw of 3, 2 and 1. From the House of Beauty, a throw of 5 sends a pawn straight off.
