Brick Breaker - Rules, History & Strategy Guide

Bat-and-ball brick games defined the first arcade decade: a paddle, a ball, a wall of bricks, and the promise that one more credit would finish the level. The formula survived every hardware generation since, because aiming a bounce never stops being satisfying.

Brick Breaker is Arcadia’s original take on that genre: six brick formations, three lives, two-hit bricks and wide-paddle capsules, with physics simulated at a fixed 120 Hz so the bounce feels the same on every machine.

The goal is to clear every brick from all six formations before your three lives run out. Your remaining lives carry over from one formation to the next.

1. Move the paddle with your mouse, finger or the arrow keys.
2. Launch the ball with a tap or the space bar.
3. Keep the ball in play — where it lands on the paddle decides its angle.
4. Break every brick; strong bricks need two hits, and some drop a capsule that widens your paddle.
5. Clear all six formations to win the run; your best score is saved.

The paddle is not a wall, it is an aiming device: the further from the centre the ball lands, the sharper the bounce.

• Aim for the sides and top of a formation — a ball that gets behind the bricks clears rows on its own.
• Use the sharp-angle edges of the paddle deliberately to reach awkward corners.
• Catch wide-paddle capsules early in a formation, when the extra safety pays off longest.
• Slow down on the last few bricks: a controlled centre bounce beats a wild edge hit.

The genre has seen countless twists — power-ups that multiply balls, bricks that fight back, levels that scroll. Arcadia’s version keeps the classic core: fixed formations, honest physics and one upgrade capsule that rewards catching.
