The Game of 58 Holes
A pharaoh’s favorite — the finest surviving set is in the Met Museum

THROW & RACE

Throw four casting sticks and run your five hounds down your own 29-hole track. Every peg needs an exact throw to leave the board.

LINKS & NEFER HOLES

Linked holes slide a peg forward along the carved paths. Starred nefer holes grant another throw, as do throws of 1, 4 and 5.

HOW TO PLAY
Hounds & Jackals — the Egyptian game of 58 holes

THE BOARD

Each side owns a private track of 29 holes. Your five hounds race down your track, the Jackal’s five pegs race down his. There is no capturing — it is a pure race with shortcuts and lucky holes.

THROWING

Four casting sticks are thrown. Count the light sides up: that is your move (1 to 4). All dark sides up counts as 5. A throw of 1, 4 or 5 grants another throw. A peg enters the board on the hole matching your throw.

LINKS & NEFER HOLES

Landing exactly on a linked hole slides your peg forward along the carved path (hole 6 leads to 20, hole 8 to 10). Landing on a starred nefer hole (15 or 25) grants another throw. Two of your own pegs can never share a hole.

WINNING

A peg leaves the board only on an exact throw past hole 29. If a throw fits no legal move, the turn passes. The first player to run all five pegs off the board wins.

HOUNDS WIN
All five hounds are home. A race worthy of a pharaoh.
