How do you play Euchre?

Choose a trump suit through bidding, follow suit, and try to win at least three of the five tricks with your partner. The makers score when they make their contract; defenders score when they stop it. The first team to 10 wins.

Which cards are used?

Euchre uses 24 cards: 9, 10, jack, queen, king and ace in each of the four suits. Each player receives five cards.

What are the right and left bowers?

The right bower is the jack of trump. The left bower is the jack of the other suit of the same color. They rank first and second, and both belong to trump. With hearts trump, J♥ is right and J♦ is left.

What does order up mean?

It makes the turned card's suit trump. The dealer picks up that card and discards one face down. The player who ordered up becomes the maker.

Can I go alone?

Yes, as the maker. Choose alone before ordering up or naming trump. Your partner sits out. Take all five tricks for 4 points, or three or four for 1. Defenders cannot choose to go alone.

What happens when everyone passes?

After four first round passes, bidding continues with the other three suits. If all four pass again, the next dealer deals a new hand without scoring. Arcadia does not use stick the dealer.

What does getting euchred mean?

The makers took fewer than three tricks, so the defending team adds 2 points. This is also the penalty when an alone attempt takes fewer than three.
