Dou Shou Qi — the Game of Fighting Animals
Also known as Animal Chess or Jungle Chess

RANK BEATS RANK

Elephant, lion, tiger, leopard, wolf, dog, cat, rat. An animal takes any enemy of equal or lower rank — except that the rat, and only the rat, can bring down the elephant.

RIVERS, TRAPS, DEN

Only the rat swims. Lion and tiger leap the rivers — unless a rat is in the water. Step into an enemy trap and your rank drops to zero. Reach the enemy den and you win.

HOW TO PLAY
Jungle — Dou Shou Qi ('Game of Fighting Animals')

THE BOARD

Seven files by nine ranks. Two rivers of six squares each sit in the middle. Each side has a den (★) with three traps (✕) around it. You are the amber animals at the bottom; you move first.

RANK ORDER

An animal captures any enemy of equal or lower rank.

🐘 Elephant 8🦁 Lion 7🐯 Tiger 6🐆 Leopard 5🐺 Wolf 4🐕 Dog 3🐈 Cat 2🐀 Rat 1

THE RAT

The rat is the only animal that may enter the water, and the only one that can capture the elephant — but only from a land square, never out of the river. A rat in the water cannot be touched from land; only another swimming rat can take it.

LEAPING THE RIVER

Lion and tiger jump straight across a river to the first dry square beyond, capturing an equal or lower-ranked animal that is standing there. The tiger leaps up and down only; the lion leaps sideways too. Any rat in the water — yours or the enemy’s — blocks the leap.

TRAPS AND DENS

Either side may walk on any trap, but an animal standing in an enemy trap has rank 0 and can be taken by anything; its rank returns the moment it steps off. You may never move into your own den.

WINNING

Move any animal into the enemy den, or capture every enemy animal. A player with no legal move loses. If 120 moves pass with no capture, the game is drawn.
