The Aztec Game of Beans and Treasures
Played in the courts of Tenochtitlan; the gods watched every toss

TOSS & RACE

Toss five marked beans and race six markers around the cross. Five marks scores 10, a blank toss scores 20.

WAGER & CAPTURE

Both players stake six jade treasures. Capture a marker to take one; land on a penalty square and you pay one. Lose your last treasure and you lose the game.

HOW TO PLAY
Patolli — Aztec race game (modern reconstruction)

THE BOARD

Fifty-two squares in a cross. You and Xolotl race around the same circuit from opposite corners of the center, each with six markers. Complete the full circuit to bring a marker home.

TOSSING

Five beans are tossed. Marked faces up count 1 to 4; all five marked counts 10; all blank counts 20. A toss of exactly 1 enters a new marker on your start square (your first marker may enter on any toss).

TREASURES

Both players stake six jade treasures. Landing exactly on an enemy marker captures it and takes one treasure. Landing on a red triangle square costs you one treasure. A player whose treasures run out loses immediately.

SPECIAL SQUARES

The gold squares at the four arm ends grant another toss. The turquoise center squares are shared by both circuits — the most dangerous ground on the board. Win by bringing all six markers home, or by bankrupting Xolotl.
