PYLOS

The Pyramid Stacking Game

◆ MODERN ABSTRACT · 1986 ◆

1 STACK

Place spheres on the 4×4 base. Higher levels nest into the saddles between four spheres of the level below — you can only build up where the foundation is complete.

2 SQUARES

Complete a 2×2 square of your own colour and you may take back one or two of your own spheres from the pyramid — back into your reserve to play again.

3 THE TOP

Place your sphere at the apex to win. The catch: each player has only 15 spheres, so spending fewer than your opponent is the path to the top.

THE RULES

The Pyramid

The pyramid has four levels: a 4×4 base, then 3×3, then 2×2, capped by a single sphere at the apex. Higher-level spheres nest into the saddles between four supports below.

Each Turn

On your turn, place one of your spheres on any empty position. You can play to the base any time. Higher levels are only available when all four supports below are filled.

Squares

If your placement completes a 2×2 square of your own colour (on any level), you may take back one or two of your own spheres from the pyramid. The retrieved spheres return to your reserve to be played again.

Removable Spheres

You can only remove spheres that aren't supporting another sphere above them. The square claim is optional — you can skip it.

Winning

The first player to place a sphere at the apex wins. If a player runs out of spheres in reserve and can't move, they lose. Conserving spheres through square claims is the heart of the game.

DEFEAT

The opponent crowned the pyramid.
